CocoLux (firm) At the core of this robust CocoLux futon mattress is coir, a natural fibre, the fibrous husk of the coconut shell. It is extremely tough and a unique feature is that it is naturally resistant to water. The fibers have many uses such as floor and outdoor mats, aquarium filters, cordage and rope, but our interest is for use as a natural filling in our futon mattresses and the firm feel it offers. The coir fibre is elastic enough to twist without breaking and it holds a curl as though permanently waved. Pads of curled brown coir fibre, made by needle-felting (a machine technique that mats the fibres together) are shaped and cut appropriately to fill mattresses. These brown coir pads are sprayed with rubber latex which bonds the fibres together (rubberized coir) and that combination makes the mattress filling free of bacteria and fungal spores. Literally it is moth-proof, resistant to fungi and will not rot. Because it is naturally flame-retardant it doesn’t have to be chemically treated. The CocoLux futon mattress with its special core will be unaffected by moisture and dampness. It will be tough, durable and spring back to shape even after constant use. Textiles/Top Cover: As part of the price you can choose a coloured fixed mattress cover from our variety of plain fabrics: cotton drills or for a little extra the funky cotton chenille & faux suede range. However, if your futon is being used as a sofa we recommend you consider a washable removable top cover as it will protect your futon mattress from the little accidents that plague our homes such as spills, kids and pets, please check out this top covers link for all the available options. The natural fibres in the filling of the mattress don't like to get wet.
