Futon Mattresses

Its long been a notion of mine to be able to show what fillings are used to construct our hand finished futon mattresses. After numerous attempts I hope you''ll agree these images give a useful peek into what goes where in the dark world of futon mattress manufacturing. Most futon mattress makers don't want to disclose what fillings they use, but as a small business with an environmentally friendly and ethical outlook we are proud to show the nature of our fillings. 

Brilliant NEWS: chemical free filling for our futon mattresses

New year 2011 heralds a major breakthrough for our range of futon mattresses. For 20 years there's been a mandatory law in place that has required a chemical called Boric Acid be used on all the cotton and cotton derivatives that go into the manufacture of mattresses, futon or otherwise. For a very long time we have wanted to avoid using any chemicals in the manufacture of our futon fillings and now with the help and consultation of the regulatory authorities and our principle raw material suppliers we have reached that point. 

The top and bottom of any futon mattress should be a natural fibre and the use of cotton has been the best option over the past nearly 40 years or so. The idea is to have a material that will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter and cotton fills that criteria but it has to be treated with chemicals for Fire Regulation purposes.

When the floods in Pakistan and drought in Russia during 2010 raised the cotton commodity price by over 70% we renewed our efforts to find an alternative to cotton. What we have found as a replacement is LAMBSWOOL. The inherent properties of this natural fibre don't require it to be treated for Fire Retardency laws, it is also now about the same price as cotton whereas in the past it has been much more expensive. So, no price increase because we are using lambswool.

The first mattress, Regular, is for single chair/beds and two seater futon frames. A mainstay of the futon business, this 6 layer futon mattress is versatile, comfortable and affordable. We like to offer a choice and the Reflex Foam is an upgrade for two seater frames that will have a lot of use for both sitting and sleeping.    

The TwinLoft is the other mainstay of our business used for three seater futon frames, beds and replacement mattresses. This 8 layer futon mattress offers support for the spine when sleeping and real comfort when used for sitting as a sofa.   

All of our NEW FUTON MATTRESSES TradLux, CocoLux and both the PocketSprungLux and PocketSprung Regular can be used as the TwinLoft on bi folding/3 seater futon frames or any type of regular bed frame.

As of Spring 2011 all of our 5'0"/153cms wide futon mattresses will now be 6'6"/198cms in length.
