Egyptian Cotton 400 Thread Count

EGYPTIAN COTTON

  • Our ideas are often arrived at via seeing pictures or images and when I think of Egyptian Cotton, movies like Cleopatra come to mind with ‘00’s of extras in brilliant white robes and loin cloths filling the screen.Science tells us that 100% Egyptian Cotton is superior to the rest, that for this post we’ll call Regular Cotton. The structure and properties of the plant are quite different to Regular cotton.
  • Rich soil and the high moisture levels in the Nile Valley are the main reasons why the cotton produced there has longer fibres that produce high quality “staples”. Length of the fibres is the key component when making the finest yarns without losing the strength or durability of the finished material.
  • The cotton is handpicked leaving the fibres straighter, flexible and with more of the plant intact which reduces stress to the plant. These finer staples are thinner and stronger which means that in any square inch of fabric the Thread Count will be higher.
  • Thread Count or TC is an accepted way of measuring cotton quality. The taut weave of Egyptian Cotton will have fewer “splices” or intersections and this translates to a softer feel and increased durability, and a stronger fabric. Put another way, the more uninterrupted threads used when making the yarn will result in a better fabric. The higher the TC the more luxurious and soft the fabric will feel.
  • The porous nature of Egyptian Cotton means moisture is more readily soaked up and pass through the material, then it will evaporate. This wicking away of moisture can help better sleep as the bed or sleeping surface will be drier. Poorer qualities of cotton or poly/cotton mixes can get damp which will not help those with arthritic or rheumatic conditions.
  • The higher porosity also helps the cotton absorb liquids better so that when dying the yarn the colour will go deeper, be brighter and more resistant to fading.

Whether you have traditional or contemporary taste the qualities of this cotton will give family and friends alike a taste of luxury. So beware the fakes that are always on offer and take the time to check labels and Thread Counts.

The terms “sateen and percale” are different weave types not fabric types. Percale is regarded as lighter and ideal for those who sweat when sleeping whereas Sateen feels cosy but a little heavier. .
