Double bed first of all refers to a UK standard size that's 137 x 190 cm or
4'6" x 6'3". This is a reference point that cannot be challenged. The same size is in use for sofa bed measurements also.
There are uniform measurements so that ancillary products like bedding and duvets will work in tandem and fit properly.
Size difference UK - Europe
While the UK or British has their own size another standard is in use on Mainland Europe. Continental Europe has in use Metric measurements. Where these measurements are the norm 140 x 200 mt is standard, so different both width and length.
Therefore it's essential to bear this in mind when buying a bed in Europe as well as Britain.
Bed materials
A double size or dbl. for short can be made from either timber or metal, probably steel. Quality plays a part when considering buying a wooden double bed.
Consequently inferior Pine can be found quite readily.and the issues of splitting or cracking occur. The number of knots in wood often determines the problems of splits and cracks. The more knots the more likely these issues will be found.
Pine and Redwood with fewer knots will quite simply split or crack less.
Another problem with cheaper cuts of timber is weeping. This happens when the wood isn't seasoned correctly and hence the sap leaks out of crack or knots.
Metal Double Beds
A double bed may also be made of metal. What should be taken into consideration here is the platform for sleeping. Mesh should be avoided because it will not be supportive and as a result will dip in the middle. A better option is flexi slats. Mostly these flexi slats are laminated strips of Beech wood. They are very strong and distribute weight evenly, furthermore virtually indestructible.
